Reference Board

Terms, simply framed.

These terms explain the basic rules for using the Reference website and app, including purchases, acceptable use, your content, and the limits that apply to the service.

Last updated: September 3, 2026

Personal and professional use

When you download Reference, you receive a limited license to use the app for personal, professional, or internal creative work in accordance with these terms and Apple's platform rules.

Your content stays yours

You keep ownership of the references, notes, and media you add, but you are responsible for making sure you have the right to use them.

Fair use of the product

You agree not to misuse the website or app, interfere with the service, or use Reference in a way that violates law or the rights of others.

Acceptance of Terms

These Terms apply to your use of the Reference website and the Reference app. By accessing the website, downloading the app, or using any related services, you agree to these Terms.

If you do not agree to these Terms, do not use the website or the app.

Who We Are

Reference is provided by Danny Ruchtie. References in these Terms to "Reference," "we," "us," or "our" refer to the website, app, and related services made available under that name.

License to Use Reference

Subject to these Terms and any applicable App Store rules, we grant you a limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable license to use Reference for your personal, professional, or internal creative work.

You may not copy, resell, distribute, reverse engineer, or exploit Reference except where permitted by applicable law.

  • Use the app only on devices and accounts you are authorized to use
  • Do not attempt to bypass technical restrictions or security measures
  • Do not reproduce or redistribute the product without permission

Purchases and Billing

Reference is offered to new customers as a one-time paid App Store download with Reference Pro included. The exact regional price and any applicable taxes are shown by Apple before purchase.

People who acquired Reference while it was offered for free may keep using the Free plan with its board and item limits, or make a one-time in-app purchase to unlock Reference Pro. Reaching a Free limit does not delete existing work.

A Reference Pro purchase unlocks Pro in the iPhone, iPad, and Mac apps on supported devices associated with the same Apple Account. Family Sharing is available subject to Apple's eligibility requirements and platform rules.

Apple handles billing, payments, receipts, refunds, and transaction processing according to its own terms and policies. Reference Pro is not a recurring subscription. Pricing or included features may change over time, but any change will be described at the point of purchase.

Your Content

You retain ownership of the content you add to Reference, including images, videos, notes, boards, and other creative materials.

You are solely responsible for the content you upload, import, save, or sync, and for making sure you have the necessary rights, permissions, and legal basis to use that content.

If you choose to publish a board to the web, you direct Reference to create and store an optimized copy of that board and make it available through a public link. You grant us the limited permission needed to host, process, reproduce, and display that published copy solely to operate the web-publishing feature. You can update or unpublish the board from Reference.

  • Do not upload content you do not have the right to use
  • Do not use Reference to infringe copyright, privacy, or other rights
  • Do not upload unlawful, abusive, or malicious content
  • Do not publish confidential content or personal information unless you have permission to make it public

Acceptable Use

You agree not to misuse the website or app. That includes interfering with normal operation, attempting unauthorized access, scraping or harvesting data in a harmful way, or using Reference to distribute malware, spam, or harmful code.

We may suspend or terminate access if we reasonably believe use of the service violates these Terms or creates risk for other users, third parties, or the service itself.

Third-Party Services and Content

Reference may integrate with or rely on third-party services such as Apple services, YouTube, TelemetryDeck for anonymous app analytics, Vercel for website hosting and analytics, Supabase for the website's curated reference feeds, websites you visit, or embedded external content. Those services are governed by their own terms and privacy policies.

We are not responsible for third-party content, availability, or practices. Your use of those services is at your own risk.

Availability and Changes

We may update, improve, change, suspend, or discontinue parts of Reference at any time. We do not guarantee that the website or app will always be available, uninterrupted, or error-free.

We may also update these Terms from time to time. If we make material changes, we will post the revised Terms on this page and update the effective date.

Disclaimers

Reference is provided on an "as is" and "as available" basis to the fullest extent permitted by law. We do not make warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, including warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, non-infringement, or uninterrupted availability.

You are responsible for backing up important content and for how you choose to use the service in your own workflow.

Limitation of Liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, Danny Ruchtie and Reference will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or for any loss of profits, revenues, data, goodwill, or business opportunities arising out of or related to your use of the website or app.

If liability cannot be excluded entirely, our total liability will be limited to the amount you paid for Reference, if any, in the twelve months before the event giving rise to the claim.

Termination

You may stop using Reference at any time. We may suspend or terminate access to the website or app if necessary to protect the service, comply with law, or respond to misuse.

Sections that by their nature should survive termination, including ownership, disclaimers, limitations of liability, and dispute-related provisions, will continue to apply.
